The news this week has been dominated by the dramatic fire of a residential tower in Dubai. Incredibly no one was killed or even seriously injured, a really positive sign for the building’s design. However even by a cursory scan of the photographs and preliminary information, other questions are raised. Why did the fire spread so fast? And why did flaming panels cascade from the structure greatly increasing the risk of fire spread and injury to people in the streets below. In this week’s Shop Talk, Michael Hammond talks to two WAN AWARDS judges, Bruce Nicol from the High Performance Building group at Dow Corning and formerly a façade consultant with Arup Facades and Martin Clarke OBE representing the World Concrete Forum.
